Demeter certificate or Demeter standard as some prefer to call it, is a guarantee that products come from biodynamic agriculture. Demeter logo is typically seen on organic products but not all of them as organic farming doesn’t require farmers to follow the methods of biodynamic agriculture. Organic and biodynamic agriculture are very much alike as they grow food without the use of genetically modified organisms, chemicals, or hormones. However, soil is often even better looked after in biodynamic agriculture and therefore Demeter can be considered to be even better than Organic certification alone.
Demeter was founded in 1928, and it is the world’s first ecological food and farming trademark used in 60 countries. More info at https://demeter.net/
Demeter Certificate – biodynamic agriculture
EU organic regulations require a two-year conversion period in farming whereas Demeter standards require an additional year of conversion. The additional year is to ensure eight mineral and plant-based preparations are being used to activate soil life and plant growth on the land.
Biodynamic farming aims to create healthy soil. Healthy soil can be achieved by using compost and crop and grazing rotations (see our article What is regenerative farming? explaining why it is important to let animals stomp on ground).
Why makes Demeter Standard products so great?
We love good wine. And not just any wine but raw wine. That is the original wine in our opinion as it has been made without unnecessary intervention and without any nasty additives or chemicals. If we cannot get our hands on organic raw wine, we are choosing an organic Demeter certified wine instead.
Demeter winegrowers are characterised by attentiveness and responsibility. They don’t only produce great wine, but also truly care for the whole ecosystem.
Demeter milk and dairy products are of a very high standard and flavour. Every careful step from how the animals are being fed and looked after results in very different taste and flavour. A healthy soil actually makes such a difference in the flavour as well. A healthy soil also has more nutrients in it that are of course taken from the roots to the plants as well. Demeter only permits pasteurisation and not homogenisation of milk. We prefer organic raw milk and definitely stay away from products that are homogenisated.
